What Defines a Valid Structural Swing?

A true market impulse leg begins at a point of market consensus shift—where aggressive market orders overcome passive liquidity, causing price to displace away from a consolidation or key support/resistance zone. To establish a legitimate anchor point (0.0% or 100.0%), price must fulfill three specific conditions:

  • Clear Expansion: The impulse leg must contain strong-bodied displacement candles with minimal overlapping wicks, indicating decisive institutional participation.
  • Break of Intermediate Structure: The movement must take out at least one previous swing high or swing low, confirming directional intent rather than internal churn.

Handling Extreme Wicks vs Candle Bodies

The Multi-Timeframe Calibration Rule

Never draw Fibonacci retracements in isolation on a single timeframe. The most reliable reversal zones occur when a higher-timeframe 50.0% or 61.8% retracement aligns directly with a lower-timeframe 100% extension or key structural order block.
